FLESH+WOOD+METAL

IN 2009 MAGALI BABIN AND HERMAN KOLGEN INITIATED A SERIES OF IMPROVISATIONS ON A DISSECTED DRUM KIT, EXPLORING ITS PHYSICAL FORM AND SONIC TEXTURES. INSPIRED BY THESE IMPROVISATIONS, FLESH + WOOD + METAL ARE THE MATERIALS COMPRISED IN THIS SOUND INSTALLATION.

HISTORICALLY, PERCUSSIVE INSTRUMENTS WERE A MEANS OF COMMUNICATION FOR ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS, IT IS THEREFORE APPROPRIATE THAT THIS INSTALLATION BE STRONGLY IMBUED WITH NOTIONS OF COMMUNICATION AND TERRITORY. THE THREE COMPONENT OF FLESH + WOOD + METAL ARE ACTIVATED ACCORDING TO THE TOPOGRAPHICAL VARIATIONS, MARINE TURBULENCES AND THE AMBIENT SOUND OF THE CITY OF QUÉBEC.A THREE-WAY SONIC DIALOGUE WILL ALLOW US TO HEAR WHAT THE EAR DOESN’T ALWAYS PERCEIVE, BUT THAT THE BODY SENSES.

FLESH + WOOD + METAL IS ALSO A RECONSTRUCTED MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. IN PERFORMANCE, THE THREE COMPONENTS ARE PLAYED BY THE ARTISTS, WHO WERE ABLE TO INVENT A SENTIVE AND POWERFUL SONIC LANGUAGE BUILT AROUND THESE THREE MATERIALS.
